21 year old Angus lost his Pa (grandfather) Serge, a couple of years ago after a pancreatic cancer diagnosis, followed by a stroke.
Angus’ family were introduced to the Karuna team in January 2022, who provided specialist palliative and end of life care, so Serge could remain at home with his family.
“We quickly came to know the Karuna team as the kind and generous nurses and support staff who cared so beautifully for my Pa and our family. Karuna were there for us during the final month of my Pa’s life. Having their support gave my family the opportunity to say a gentle and personal goodbye to our Pa, on our own terms,” said Angus.
“I was only 19 years old when he died. When I look back at that final month of my Pa’s life, I recognise that the at-home, end-of-life care gave us a chance to feel some normality in a period of uncertainty and sadness.’
Angus is currently training for his biggest race yet – an Ironman70.3. And he’s doing it in honour of his Pa. All funds raised through Angus’ challenge, will go directly towards supporting Karuna.
“My grandfather taught me that giving back is not about giving millions or re-mortgaging your house. It’s about working as a community to raise money and awareness. Giving what you can and spreading the word of Karuna’s services is what will ultimately lead to the greatest outcomes.”
