5th Annual Karuna Christmas Market

By supporting Karuna’s 5th Annual Christmas Market on November 21 and 22, you too can join the ranks of the truly organised and have your Christmas tree up, decorated and presents underneath before December arrives!

Our display rooms will include: decorated front door wreaths, swags,  table centre pieces with candles,  Christmas cards and gift tags, all sorts of handmade Xmas decorations, jams, pickles, biscuits and Christmas cakes, Karuna’s famous cranberry sauce, handmade toys, coat hangers, aprons, fun shower caps, tea towels,  cupcakes, Christmas trees, Christmas puddings, hand towels, beautiful handbags, purses and jewellery bags to name a few. There will also be a bumper Christmas raffle with prizes including a unique handcrafted dollhouse and adorable porcelain doll.

Safe in the knowledge that you can stock up on gifts and lovingly handmade decorations, why not reward yourself?  On Friday evening you can immerse yourself in the sounds of the Hillbrook Anglican School choir while you enjoy some scrumptious Christmas cake and a glass of chilled sparkling wine. On Saturday you can enjoy some equally delectable cake and cool fruit juice in the sunshine.

There will also be a kindness tree where you can leave messages in memory of a loved one, or messages for world peace and goodwill.

All proceeds from the Christmas market will go towards Karuna’s free home hospice service and various community programs.

Thank you for Supporting Karuna’s Winter Appeal

When Karuna approached me and asked if I would mind sharing our story as part of the June fund raiser I did so with no hesitation. Anything I could do that might help Karuna help other families was absolutely something I was pleased and honoured to do.

Writing ‘What If We Came Home’ was both difficult and easy for me. Difficult because it touched a place in my heart that still grieves intensely but easy because it meant that I could, in some small way acknowledge the amazing gift that Karuna had given us.

Your response and generosity to this story has been overwhelming and together we have provided resources and funds that will help to support Karuna’s work into the future.

For all your kindness and donations I wish to thank you all. Knowing that together we have provided caring and assistance for people during their darkest and most difficult hours keeps that light shinning in my heart.

Since I last wrote to you, I have become involved in organizing another fundraising event to support Karuna and I would like to invite you all to be a part of it. On September 22nd my friends and I have organised an afternoon of music and entertainment at Southbank.

Admission is free, so do look out for the flyer that will be coming your way soon. Everyone who attends will be given the opportunity to make a donation if they wish. Every cent raised as part of this concert will go to Karuna.

So please try to make time to join us and relax, enjoy wonderful music and share in a special celebration of caring and support.

Please mark 22nd September in your diary (from 1pm to 5pm at QPAC Southbank). I look forward to seeing you there, and once again, thank you for opening your hearts and responding so wonderfully to the June appeal.

2007 visit by His Holiness the Dalai Lama

In 2007 His Holiness the Dalai Lama will give us an opportunity to explore more deeply what is truly meaningful in our lives. His Holiness will visit Brisbane on June 13 as part of his twelve day Australian tour. Karuna is working with the national tour organisers to give as many Queenslanders as possible the opportunity to experience the wisdom and compassion of this revered spiritual leader.

Kindness Week is a Karuna Hospice Services community initiative inspired by the upcoming visit of his Holiness the Dalai Lama. It is designed to nurture the spirit of kindness as a way of creating a happier life.

Kindness Week ‘07 activities will reflect the inspiration and simplicity of His Holiness’ Australian Tour theme - Open Arms, Embracing Kindness.

New Life at Karuna

If you haven’t dropped by Karuna House lately, you’re in for a very pleasant surprise!

In the space of a couple of months, what was a dry and dusty wasteland at the front of Karuna House has been transformed into a magnificent Queensland garden including hundreds of plants generously donated by John Hawkins of Hawkins Home and Garden Centre. The flora ranges in size from a grand Magnolia tree and splendid Cuban Royal palms to what will be delicate little lotus flowers floating in an attractive central fountain when completed.

Designed by heritage architect Desley Campbell-Stewart and constructed by Lindsay Pratt of Harmony Landscapes, the new gardens provide a truly magnificent setting for our 19th century homestead, Karuna House, formerly known as Rosemount Villa. Of course Rosemount is no stranger to beautiful gardens especially rose gardens from which the property is originally thought to have taken its name. (In fact one of the original heritage listed rose gardens still remains on the property to this day.)

Mr Alfred Jones lived at Rosemount in the 1880’s when the property’s spacious 75 acres sprawled from Lutwyche Road right down to the banks of Breakfast Creek along what is now Cartwright St. He became famous throughout the colony for his impressive bush houses with their fine selection of native orchids, tree ferns and staghorns which were found and collected for him by the local Turrbul aboriginal people from the then virgin bush of adjacent Kelvin Grove.

The grand carriage way which once led up to the front entrance of Rosemount Villa from Lutwyche Road in the 19th century has been partially re-created in the new garden at Karuna House by an avenue of stately Cuban Royal palms.

Poinciana, frangipani and yellow flame trees have been set off with generous plantings of camellia, cordyline, gardenia, mock orange, agapanthus and jasmine throughout the new gardens. A Buddhist Stupa is planned as a feature outside the reception area in the not too distant future. A stupa is a monument common throughout Buddhist culture which represents the qualities of an enlightened mind (eg wisdom and compassion). Such monuments are beautifully crafted and
decorated to inspire and uplift us.
